Landslip Claims 10 Lives in Papua New Guinea’s East New Britain

Ten people have been confirmed dead after a devastating landslip buried them alive at Lamarain in the Inland Baining area of Gazelle District, East New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea.

The incident is believed to have been triggered when the Toriu River burst its banks following continuous heavy rainfall in the region.

Local Member for Gazelle, Jelta Wong

Local Member for Gazelle, Jelta Wong, confirmed the incident this morning, stating that despite the remoteness of the area posing serious logistical challenges, all ten bodies have been recovered.

Mr Wong said authorities are now working to confirm the identities of the victims, which will be announced once verification is completed.

He also acknowledged the support of East New Britain Governor Michael Marum, the Gazelle District Administration, and local leaders for their coordinated response during the crisis.

Mr Wong commended their efforts in managing the situation under difficult conditions brought about by extreme weather affecting the New Guinea Islands and surrounding coastal areas.

He extended condolences to the families of the deceased, saying the nation stands with them in grief.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this difficult time,” he said.

Mr Wong added that authorities remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of communities and will continue to address the impacts of natural disasters across the district.
