PNG Defence Force Enforces Nationwide ‘Close Camp’ After Capital Unrest
The Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) has been placed under a month-long nationwide “close camp” following unrest by soldiers in the capital.
Chief of Defence Force Rear Admiral Philip Polewara issued Directive No. 7 of 2026, which takes immediate effect and imposes strict security and movement controls across all military establishments.

The directive is aimed at restoring order and stabilising the force amid ongoing concerns surrounding the PNGDF recruitment process.
Under the “close camp” order, access to all barracks nationwide will be restricted, with movements in and out tightly controlled. Civilian entry into military facilities has also been significantly limited.
Additionally, all military vehicles are to remain grounded unless authorised in writing, while security at unit armouries has been heightened. No weapons or ammunition will be issued during the lockdown period.
Rear Admiral Polewara warned that any breach of the directive will be treated as a serious disciplinary offence. Unit commanders have been instructed to ensure full compliance as part of efforts to maintain internal discipline and national security.
