PNG Defence Force Recruitment Row Deepens as Minister Joseph Rejects Nepotism Claims

Defence Minister Dr Billy Joseph has rejected allegations of nepotism in the Papua New Guinea Defence Force recruitment process, as fresh videos circulating on social media intensify public scrutiny.

The footage, widely shared online, repeatedly mentions Dr Joseph’s name while questioning the integrity of the 2026 recruitment intake and alleging political influence in candidate selection.

However, Dr Joseph insisted the process was conducted fairly, emphasising that all applicants followed the same procedure through an online recruitment system.

“There are no short cuts. Every candidate applied through the official online portal,” he said.

The minister also raised concerns about how some candidates were treated during interviews, claiming they were subjected to intimidation and pressured to respond in ways that supported certain agendas.

He further criticised reports of recruits being mistreated during age verification checks.

“Where there is uncertainty, proper medical assessment should be conducted instead of exposing recruits to inhumane conditions,” he stated.

During the March session of Parliament, Morobe Governor Renbo Paita called for the suspension of the recruitment exercise and an independent inquiry, citing transparency issues and claims that over-aged candidates were selected.

Dr Joseph, however, maintained that an independent company managed the selection process and that all applicants were thoroughly vetted.

Meanwhile, the Opposition is expected to address the matter publicly later today, as debate continues to grow both inside and outside Parliament.
