The agreement, officially ratified on March 20, 2026, positions PNG at the forefront of formalising the bilateral arrangement, with Australia expected to complete its part of the process in the coming months.
Mr Tkatchenko said PNG had moved ahead to endorse the treaty, setting the stage for its partner nation to follow through with its own certification.
He explained that once both countries exchange the ratified documents, the treaty will be activated and implemented.
The Minister said the arrangement sets strict benchmarks for recruitment, training and overall preparedness of military personnel under the agreement.
He added that the pact broadens cooperation across defence operations, reinforcing the responsibility of the armed forces to safeguard PNG’s sovereignty and national interests.
Mr Tkatchenko also highlighted the wider benefits of the partnership, pointing to Australia’s support during emergencies such as the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Maila, saying, “Today, Papua New Guinea has led the charge in ratifying and certifying the Puk Puk Treaty, and Australia will therefore follow in the next couple of months to formalise it and finalise the certification.”
