PNG ICT Authority Welcomes Legal Clarity on Starlink Satellite Broadband Internet Licensing
Papua New Guinea’s ICT sector has received a boost following a court ruling that settles uncertainty around satellite internet operations, with the national regulator welcoming the outcome.
The National Information and Communications Technology Authority said the decision by the National Court of Papua New Guinea confirms the country’s commitment to upholding proper licensing procedures in the telecommunications industry.
NICTA explained that strict adherence to regulatory requirements remains essential for all operators, noting that compliance promotes fair competition and ensures that consumers receive reliable and protected services.
The matter stemmed from a directive issued by the Ombudsman Commission on February 7, 2024, which sought to cancel Starlink’s licence. That directive has now been overturned by the court after a prolonged legal process.
The regulator said the ruling reinforces confidence in Papua New Guinea’s governance systems and highlights the importance of respecting established laws in the rapidly evolving ICT space.
NICTA also reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing dialogue with Starlink Internet Services and other stakeholders to ensure regulatory compliance, attract investment, and support national ICT development goals.
