PNG Power Warns of Widespread Blackouts After Cyclone Maila Damage

Papua New Guinea’s electricity provider has issued a warning to customers across several provinces, saying power outages are expected as Tropical Cyclone Maila continues to damage key infrastructure.

PNG Power Ltd said strong winds and heavy rainfall over the past two days have brought down transmission and distribution lines, leaving many communities without electricity while repair work is underway.

The company reported that areas in Madang, Morobe, Kimbe and East New Britain have been heavily affected, with flooding also forcing temporary shutdowns at the Warangoi, Lake Hargy and Ru Creek hydro power stations.

Chief Technical Officer Tony Koiri said repair teams are working under difficult and dangerous conditions to restore supply as quickly as possible.

“Our teams are working tirelessly in Madang, Morobe, Kimbe, and East New Britain to reconnect communities. Despite the dangerous conditions, PPL staff are maintaining operations at critical sites such as the Warangoi Dam, while also repairing fallen lines and clearing storm debris. Safety remains our top priority, and we urge the public to stay away from fallen powerlines and allow our crews to carry out their work.”

He said East New Britain has been among the hardest hit, with extensive damage expected to leave many customers without electricity for an extended period.

“Most of our customers in East New Britain will be without supply for indefinite periods. Our transmission and distribution lines have been severely affected by the heavy downpour and earthquake.”

PNG Power has prioritised restoring electricity to essential services, including hospitals, airports and water supply facilities, while additional teams are expected to be deployed to Kokopo to assist local crews.

The company also confirmed damage to major transmission lines and feeders in Kokopo and surrounding areas, affecting locations such as Burma, Navunaram, Vunakanau and Rabaul, and thanked customers for their patience during the recovery effort.
