Vice Chancellor Professor Ian Findlay stepped in during the lunch hour, directing the gathering to disperse and return to lectures, dormitories and homes.
The move came amid growing tension, with students reportedly planning to join the soldiers’ protest, prompting swift action from university authorities.
Professor Findlay declined to comment on the unfolding national situation but made it clear that protest activities would not be allowed within the campus.
He stressed that the university must remain focused on its academic mandate and ensure outside issues do not interfere with student learning.
While acknowledging the institution’s history of student activism on national matters, he indicated that the university would take a different position in this instance.
He noted that the semester has reached its tenth week, with students engaged in tests, assignments and project work that require full attention.
Students approached declined to speak publicly, but indicated the Student Representative Council is expected to release a statement on Friday.
Meanwhile, UniForce security has tightened operations across the campus, including at entry points, to maintain order and prevent further mobilisation.
