Former PNG PM O’Neill Slams Government Over Chiefs Recruitment, Tax Incentives
Former prime minister Peter O’Neill has criticised the PNG Government’s handling of the proposed PNG Chiefs rugby league outfit, questioning the recruitment of players and the use of tax-free incentives.
He labelled the approach as unacceptable, raising concerns about reports that players were being targeted improperly, while also taking issue with the source of funding linked to the team.

Mr O’Neill said the situation surrounding the signing of high-profile players, including West Tigers recruit and former Penrith playmaker Jerome Luai, reflected poor management and lack of transparency.
He further claimed the team’s backing involved Australian taxpayer funds, arguing that such arrangements were inappropriate and needed closer scrutiny.
Prime Minister James Marape rejected the allegations, stating the PNG Chiefs initiative was established under formal bilateral agreements between Papua New Guinea and Australia, with clear roles and responsibilities.
Mr Marape, speaking after returning from China on Friday, dismissed claims of player poaching and said the Government was not interfering with contracted athletes. “Players have contracts and proper processes will be followed,” he said.
The Prime Minister added that assembling a competitive side ahead of a planned 2028 NRL entry remained a top priority, saying, “Putting the team together is critical.”
