PNG Chiefs Eye Connor Watson After Surprise Port Moresby Visit
PNG’s newest NRL franchise has intensified its recruitment drive after Sydney Roosters utility Connor Watson touched down in Port Moresby on Sunday for high-level discussions with the PNG Chiefs.
Watson arrived alongside partner Kiara less than 24 hours after the Roosters’ Magic Round defeat to the North Queensland Cowboys in Brisbane, with the experienced playmaker granted approval by his club to meet directly with Chiefs management.

The New South Wales Origin representative is expected to inspect the club’s facilities and hold talks with Chiefs general manager Michael Chammas as the expansion side continues assembling a competitive squad ahead of its entry into the NRL competition.
Although Watson remains contracted to the Roosters until the completion of the 2027 season, the visit has fuelled speculation that the Chiefs are aggressively pursuing the versatile star as a cornerstone signing.
The Port Moresby-based franchise has already made headlines by securing the services of Wests Tigers star Jarome Luai and veteran winger Alex Johnston. Should Watson agree to terms, it would hand the Chiefs another major recruitment victory ahead of their debut season as the league’s 19th team.
Reports indicate the Roosters are prepared to consider an early release if Watson accepts a long-term offer elsewhere, despite his existing contract in Sydney.
Several rival clubs, including the St George Illawarra Dragons, Manly Sea Eagles and Perth Bears, are also believed to be monitoring Watson’s situation. However, his decision to travel directly to PNG for face-to-face talks has strengthened the Chiefs’ position in the race for his signature.
“We’re taking these discussions seriously,” sources close to the negotiations reportedly indicated as talks continue in Port Moresby.
