The support was officially presented on May 14 by Chinese Embassy Chargé d'affaires a.i. and Minister-Counsellor Pang Hanzhao to PNG Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko, in the presence of Foreign Affairs Secretary Elias Wohengu, Defence Secretary John Akipe and National Disaster Centre Director Lusete Mana.

During the ceremony, Minister-Counsellor Pang conveyed China’s condolences to communities affected by recent disasters in the country and reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to supporting PNG during difficult times.

He said China had stood alongside Papua New Guinea for the past 50 years as a trusted development partner and would continue to assist whenever support was needed.

Mr Pang also highlighted recent cooperation between the two countries, including the visit of the Chinese Navy hospital ship Silk Road Ark and Prime Minister Marape’s recent trip to Guangdong Province in China.

He said the growing relationship between the two nations reflected the importance of countries working together to address global challenges that could not be solved alone.

The PNG Government welcomed the assistance and thanked China for its ongoing support in different sectors over the years, saying both countries would continue working closely for the benefit of their people.

“PNG will continue to work together with China as partners for the betterment of the two peoples.”
