Detainees Join NCDC Drive to Clean Up PNG Capital Port Moresby
Papua New Guinea capital Port Moresby streets received a major clean-up boost this week after the National Capital District Commission joined forces with Bomana Correctional Services to carry out a city-wide sanitation campaign aimed at improving the capital’s environment and supporting detainee rehabilitation.
The exercise brought together 30 detainees from Bomana’s Minimum-Security Unit, Correctional Services officers and NCDC staff, who worked side by side to remove rubbish from public spaces across key parts of the city.

The clean-up covered a stretch from Croton Street in Waigani through to City Hall, targeting areas affected by litter and waste accumulation.
Eight Correctional Services officers supervised the detainees during the operation while personnel from NCDC’s Sports, Youth and Civic Engagement Branch and Waste Management Branch coordinated activities on the ground.
To support the campaign, NCDC provided garbage bags, personal protective equipment and waste collection services to ensure rubbish was removed efficiently.
NCDC Detainees Rehabilitation and Reform Officer Thomas Marinae said the initiative was part of efforts to encourage positive behaviour and community participation among detainees.
He said the program offered an opportunity for participants to make a practical contribution while learning the importance of environmental care and civic responsibility.
The latest activity follows a recent food donation by NCDC’s Sports, Youth and Civic Engagement Branch to Bomana Correctional Services as both organisations continue to strengthen their partnership in rehabilitation programs.
“Initiatives like this not only help keep Port Moresby clean and safe, but also allow detainees to contribute positively to the community and reconnect with society,” Mr Marinae said.
