PNG Air Navigation Services Set for Major Technology Upgrade Under New Niusky Board

Papua New Guinea's air navigation services are set to receive further technological improvements as Niusky Pacific Limited embarks on a new phase of infrastructure investment under its newly appointed board of directors. The organisation says modern digital systems, stronger communications networks and more dependable power supplies will strengthen aviation safety across PNG.

The commitment was announced following the swearing-in of the company's new board in Port Moresby last week, where chairman Jackson Kiakari pledged to continue modernising the country's air traffic management services while maintaining high standards of professionalism and accountability.

Mr Kiakari takes over the leadership of the board with Kaime Kipi serving as deputy chairman, while Jacinta Waine and Nelson Hwekwahin join as ex-officio directors. The new board succeeds the outgoing board headed by former chairman Robin Kawat.

Addressing those present during the ceremony, Mr Kiakari said the organisation would remain focused on delivering modern aviation services backed by digital tower technology, a resilient nationwide communications network and improved power reliability.

He also reaffirmed the board's commitment to working closely with management to deliver the organisation's strategic priorities while serving with diligence, integrity and professionalism.

Meanwhile, Executive Manager Business Support Paul Dopsie outlined several major infrastructure projects already underway to strengthen the country's aviation network.

He said Niusky is installing a new high-capacity fibre optic network linking Nadzab, Mount Hagen, Tokua, Goroka and Madang to improve communications supporting the national air navigation system.

Mr Dopsie said significant investment had also been secured through Australia's Transport Sector Support Programme, with A$22.5 million (approximately K65.5 million) allocated for aviation infrastructure upgrades.

He added that, for the first time, the company had also secured direct Government support through the Public Investment Programme, receiving K8 million in 2025 and a further K6 million under the 2026 National Budget.

Financially, the organisation also strengthened its position after introducing US-dollar billing for international customers, protecting revenue from foreign exchange losses while contributing to revenue growth exceeding 20 per cent by the end of 2025.

Operational figures also showed continued growth, with Niusky safely managing more than 241,000 aircraft movements throughout 2025.

"The aim is to strengthen the backbone of our national air navigation system.

Safety is our first and non-negotiable priority.

The outgoing managing director and his management team secured A$22.5 million (about K65.5 million) in development funding under the Transport Sector Support Programme, opening a new phase of infrastructure renewal and for the first time secured Government funding through the PIP programme — K8 million in 2025 and K6 million in the 2026 budget appropriations.

The move to US-dollar billing for our international customers shielded the company from foreign-exchange erosion or loss and helped drive revenue growth of more than twenty per cent year-on-year by the close of 2025.

Operationally, we safely managed more than 241,000 aircraft movements in 2025, more than the year before," Mr Dopsie said.
