PNG Government Invests K877 Million in Student Education Support

Papua New Guinea's education sector has received a major boost, with more than 2.5 million students benefiting from the Government's tuition fee subsidy initiative since the Marape-Rosso Government took office.

Prime Minister James Marape

The scale of the support was outlined by Prime Minister James Marape during the presentation of the Government's seventh performance report in Parliament on Friday, where he reaffirmed the administration's commitment to education and health services.

Mr Marape said ensuring children remained in school was a central part of the Government's development agenda, with substantial funding allocated to reduce financial pressures on parents and guardians.

According to the Prime Minister, approximately K877 million has been invested through the tuition fee subsidy program, helping schools maintain access to education nationwide.

He told Parliament that the Government had also strengthened assistance for students pursuing higher education through the Higher Education Loan Program, commonly known as HELP.

Beyond financial support, the administration has directed resources towards improving learning environments through the construction and upgrading of classrooms, science laboratories, libraries and accommodation for teachers.

Mr Marape said these investments were aimed at improving the quality of education while creating better opportunities for young Papua New Guineans entering the workforce in the future.

"Education is the most powerful investment a government can make because it is the multiplier of all other development interventions."
