Solomon Airlines Opens New Air Link Between Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands

A new chapter in regional aviation will begin next month as Solomon Airlines launches scheduled flights linking Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, providing the first direct service between Port Moresby and Honiara under the carrier's latest network expansion.

The route, which starts on July 7, is expected to strengthen economic and cultural links between the neighbouring Pacific nations by making travel easier for tourists, business travellers and families while improving connectivity across the region.

Solomon Airlines said the new service reflects its long-term strategy of expanding transport links within the Pacific and offering travellers greater convenience between the two capitals.

"This new service represents an important step in strengthening ties between our two nations, supporting both tourism and business travel while improving access and convenience for our customers," the airline said.

The inaugural flight had originally been planned for June 30 but was postponed by one week to allow final operational preparations. The airline confirmed that all required infrastructure approvals have now been completed and the service is ready to begin.

Company officials expressed confidence that strong support from domestic and international travellers, together with cooperation from codeshare and interline airline partners, will help establish the route as a sustainable long-term operation.

A formal launch ceremony will be held at Port Moresby International Airport before the inaugural departure. Celebrations will include traditional performances by students from Pacific Adventist University, speeches from Solomon Airlines executives and invited stakeholders, a ceremonial water cannon salute for the aircraft, commemorative photographs, presentation of inaugural flight certificates and an official boarding ceremony.

The inaugural journey will also feature Papua New Guinea digital content creators Morokoi and Fontygoddess, who will document and share their travel experience to Honiara through online platforms.

Passengers travelling on the new service will have access to Business and Economy Class cabins with upgraded onboard hospitality. Meals will showcase fresh regional flavours on flights in both directions, accompanied by desserts and refreshments.

Eligible Solomon Airlines passengers departing Port Moresby will also be able to use Air Niugini's Paradise Lounge at Jacksons International Airport. Access is available for Business Class travellers as well as Belama Max, Plus and Business members travelling on qualifying Solomon Airlines and partner-operated services.
