PNG Honoured for Historic Support at Vanuatu Independence Celebration

Papua New Guinea's role in helping Vanuatu achieve independence has been formally recognised during the country's 46th Independence Anniversary celebrations in Port Vila, where Prime Minister James Marape joined regional leaders to commemorate the occasion.

The recognition highlighted PNG's contribution to Vanuatu's journey to nationhood in 1980, with Vanuatu leaders acknowledging the close bond that has continued between the two Melanesian neighbours over the past four decades.

Prime Minister Marape attended the official ceremony at Independence Park alongside Vanuatu Prime Minister Jotham Napat, President Nikenike Vurobaravu and Timor-Leste President Dr José Ramos-Horta.

Thousands of people gathered for the national celebrations, which included a military parade, the raising of the Vanuatu flag, cultural performances and the Prime Minister's Independence address.

In his speech, Mr Napat reflected on PNG's assistance during Vanuatu's fight for self-rule and praised the strong partnership shared by both nations since independence.

Following the official ceremony, President Vurobaravu hosted a state luncheon where Prime Minister Marape accepted an award on behalf of Papua New Guinea in recognition of the country's enduring friendship and support for Vanuatu.

New Ireland Governor Byron Chan also received an honour in memory of his late father, Sir Julius Chan, whose contribution during Vanuatu's independence movement was acknowledged during the event.

Earlier in the week, Mr Marape told a welcome dinner that the relationship between PNG and Vanuatu was built on shared history, recalling that members of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force assisted in restoring peace before Vanuatu gained independence on July 30, 1980.

The Prime Minister is also expected to meet separately with Mr Napat and President Ramos-Horta before officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony for Papua New Guinea's new chancery in Port Vila.

"Our relationship with Papua New Guinea is a relationship between a Melanesian partner and sister," Mr Napat said. "We are grateful for PNG's unwavering support over the decades."
