PNG PM Urges World Powers to Keep Pacific Free From Military Weapons Testing
PNG Prime Minister James Marape has appealed to China and other military powers to stop using the Pacific Ocean for missile tests and weapons trials after a strategic ballistic missile was launched into international waters in the South Pacific.
Describing the Pacific as a region that should be protected for future generations, Marape said island nations want their ocean to remain a place of peace rather than one associated with military competition and growing geopolitical tensions.

The Prime Minister said Papua New Guinea continues to recognise the sovereignty of all countries and their rights under international law, but maintained that military activities capable of threatening regional peace have no place in the Pacific.
He said Pacific leaders have consistently championed the "Blue Pacific Continent" vision, which promotes cooperation, environmental stewardship and regional security without militarisation.
Marape said Pacific countries still remember the legacy left behind by wars and nuclear testing conducted decades ago and do not wish to witness another chapter of similar activities.
He also urged that missiles and other military weapons should never again be tested in Pacific waters, regardless of which nation conducts them.
The Prime Minister highlighted the ocean's environmental value, saying it plays a major role in regulating the world's climate while supporting marine ecosystems that sustain millions of people through fishing.
His remarks come as Papua New Guinea celebrates five decades of diplomatic relations with China, a partnership that began in 1976.
Marape reaffirmed the Government's support for the One China Policy and described the relationship as one based on friendship and mutual respect, while making it clear that PNG remains opposed to military escalation within the Pacific.
He said the Government intends to raise the matter directly with Chinese leaders through diplomatic channels and will continue promoting the "Ocean of Peace" message with every international partner.
"Our Pacific is an Ocean of Peace."
"Our region has lived through war, nuclear testing and military activities imposed upon us by larger powers. We do not want history repeated."
"It is in that same spirit of friendship that I respectfully appeal to our Chinese friends that this be the last such missile test conducted in Pacific waters."
"It applies equally to the United States, France, Japan, the United Kingdom and every nation with military capability. If you respect the Pacific and its people, then please respect our ocean. We ask all major powers to refrain from using Pacific waters for missile testing, military weapons trials or any activity that contributes to conflict or militarisation."
