The first flight departed from Jacksons International Airport on Saturday, July 18, following a ceremonial send-off attended by government leaders, diplomats and airline executives, celebrating the restoration of the long-awaited service.
Passengers and invited guests gathered at the Jacksons International Terminal check-in area where a ribbon-cutting ceremony officially launched the route. The event brought together Vice Minister for State-Owned Enterprises Hon. Raphael Tonpi, Japanese Ambassador to PNG H.E. Hisanobu Mochizuki, Air Niugini Board Chairman Karl Yalo and members of the airline's board.
National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop and Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer Alan Milne also attended the celebration alongside other invited guests.
The return of the Tokyo service opens a new chapter for Air Niugini as the national carrier continues to expand its international network while strengthening economic, tourism and people-to-people ties between Papua New Guinea and Japan.
"This new route marks an exciting chapter for our airline and for PNG-Japan connections."
