 East Sepik Government Backs Divine Word University Wewak Campus Expansion

A new five-year agreement between the East Sepik Provincial Government and Divine Word University is set to give PNG students in the province greater access to tertiary education through the expansion of DWU’s Wewak Campus.

The Memorandum of Partnership, covering the period from August 2026 to August 2031, brings together the provincial administration and DWU in a plan to improve campus facilities, increase student capacity and develop programmes suited to the workforce demands of East Sepik.

 

The provincial government will provide financial assistance for approved infrastructure and operational activities, while DWU will oversee project planning, design, delivery, administration and reporting.

The proposed expansion covers a wide range of facilities, including classrooms and other academic buildings, accommodation for students and staff, libraries, laboratories, workshops and information and communication technology infrastructure.

Investment may also extend to water and electricity systems, roads, solar power, campus security and recreational facilities.

Operational assistance under the agreement is expected to help the university strengthen teaching resources, laboratory equipment, accreditation processes, student practical placements and links with industries and communities.

The two parties will establish a Joint Steering Committee to keep track of the programme and ensure that projects are carried out according to agreed arrangements.

Financial reporting, acquittals, monitoring and independent audits will form part of the accountability measures attached to the use of provincial funds.

DWU President Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs, SVD, said the agreement came at an important time as the university marked its 30th anniversary.

“We are proud to support this partnership, which strongly reflects Divine Word University’s vision and mission of making quality education accessible and creating opportunities that transform lives.”

He said the university remained committed to working with provincial authorities and expanding opportunities for Papua New Guineans.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Allan Bird and the East Sepik Provincial Administration, Acting Deputy Provincial Administrator – Social Services Immanuel Warvi ToMarum said the agreement would help address the difficulties faced by students who leave the province to study.

“Too often, our students face challenges when they have to leave the province to pursue quality education.”

“Through this partnership, we hope to create greater access to quality education right here in East Sepik, giving our young people more opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed within their own province.”
