PNG expands Pacific presence with new diplomatic mission in Vanuatu

Papua New Guinea has moved to expand its diplomatic footprint in the Pacific after joining Vanuatu in launching construction of a permanent PNG Chancery in Port Vila.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held a day after Vanuatu celebrated its 46th Independence anniversary, highlighted decades of friendship between the two Melanesian countries and opened a new phase in bilateral relations.

The chancery will be developed on land presented by the Vanuatu Government following discussions between Prime Minister James Marape and Prime Minister Jotham Napat.

The event also paid tribute to PNG's role in helping restore peace in Vanuatu before independence in 1980 through the deployment of the PNG Defence Force's Kumul Force, an operation that supported the country's transition to nationhood.

Prime Minister Napat said the land donation was a lasting expression of appreciation for PNG's assistance and announced an allocation of 100 million Vatu to help fund the project.

Prime Minister Marape said the chancery would strengthen PNG's diplomatic representation while creating greater opportunities for cooperation throughout Melanesia and the wider Pacific region.

He reaffirmed PNG's backing for Vanuatu's leadership on climate issues and pledged continued collaboration in economic development, fisheries, agriculture and tourism.

Mr Marape also announced PNG's support for upgrading Port Vila's Kumul Highway ahead of Vanuatu's 50th Independence celebrations in 2030 and confirmed that land would be allocated in Port Moresby for Vanuatu to establish its own diplomatic mission.

Officials from both governments are expected to begin technical discussions on the highway project in the months ahead.

"It is a modest contribution when measured against what PNG sacrificed for Vanuatu in our hour of need," Prime Minister Napat said of his Government's financial commitment.

"This moment truly reflects the enduring spirit of Melanesia and the deep history that weave our two countries together."

Prime Minister Marape said: "Your Cabinet has made a definitive decision to grant us this premier space, and I assure you we will not let your efforts down."

"We will stand with you, contributing policy support toward political stability and assist your economic growth across vital sectors like fisheries, agriculture and tourism."
