Port Moresby has handled another major air cargo movement, with Air Niugini providing ground support for a Boeing 747 freighter carrying more than 84 tonnes of supplies for Ok Tedi Mining Limited in PNG.

The National Airlines B747F touched down at Jacksons International Airport at 2.40am on August 19 following its flight from Zhengzhou Xinzheng, China. The aircraft carried 84,117 kilograms of dry weather supplies before departing Port Moresby at 10.16am after the cargo operation was completed.

The size of the aircraft and the volume of freight required detailed preparation and coordination to ensure the aircraft could be unloaded and returned to service within the required timeframe.

 

Air Niugini said its cargo and ground handling teams worked with airport authorities, service providers and other stakeholders to complete the operation safely.

Mr Glover said the movement was an example of how aviation supports major economic activities in Papua New Guinea.

He said the movement of heavy freight through Port Moresby was especially important for industries that depend on timely deliveries to maintain operations in difficult-to-access areas.
