 National Carrier Commends PNG Regulator For A220 Training Success

A milestone in Papua New Guinea's aviation sector has been marked this week, with the country's civil aviation regulator earning commendation from Air Niugini after two of its inspectors achieved certification on the Airbus A220.

The achievement belongs to Philip Kurivo, who serves as Airworthiness Inspector and Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, and Captain Valentine Wyatt, Manager Flying Operations, both attached to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Papua New Guinea. Their training was carried out in partnership with Air Niugini, equipping CASA with the technical grounding needed to oversee the newer aircraft type now operating in the country.

Industry observers note that developments like this are key to PNG's long-term aviation strategy, which places heavy emphasis on growing local skills within the regulatory environment rather than depending on outside support.

Air Niugini's Chief Executive Officer, Alan Milne, used the occasion to reaffirm the airline's relationship with CASA, calling the partnership essential to maintaining safety across the industry as both organisations adapt to newer aircraft technology.

Milne also flagged CASA's ongoing investment in training as central to the airline's broader modernisation plans, linking it directly to future fleet upgrades and route expansion.

“We recognize the vital role CASA plays in developing a highly skilled and competent workforce,” Milne said. “Their commitment to training and professional development aligns perfectly with Air Niugini's mission to uphold safety and service quality as we modernize our fleet and expand our network.”
