PNG Adventure Park Keeper Dies after Crocodile Attack

A crocodile attack at Adventure Park in PNG has claimed the life of a senior animal keeper following an incident during a feeding demonstration on Saturday, September 5.

The experienced keeper was seriously injured after a crocodile grabbed his leg while also seizing the chicken being used during the feeding activity. The animal reportedly refused to release its grip, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Adventure Park said the feeding demonstration was not part of its scheduled program when the incident occurred.

Emergency services were called to the scene as staff worked to free the keeper and protect visitors and other employees at the park.

The keeper was eventually rescued and taken to hospital for urgent medical attention.

However, despite efforts by medical personnel, Adventure Park confirmed that the staff member died in the early hours of Sunday, September 6.

The park expressed its appreciation to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary and St John Ambulance for their swift response during the emergency.

Police euthanised the crocodile during the rescue operation after determining that action was necessary to protect human life.

Adventure Park said it has launched a full internal review to establish how the incident occurred and identify measures that could prevent a similar tragedy.

The review will also assess current procedures covering crocodile management, animal handling and feeding demonstrations.

The attraction said the welfare and safety of employees, visitors and the wider community remained its highest priority.

Adventure Park described the deceased as a valued member of its team and extended condolences to his family and colleagues.

The park also appealed to members of the public and media to respect the privacy of the family and staff as they deal with the loss.
