Papua New Guinea Defence Force has introduced Starlink internet services as part of efforts to strengthen communication between its headquarters and personnel stationed around the country.
The new satellite internet service is being tested at Murray Barracks and the Force Support Battalion, with plans to expand connectivity to other PNGDF bases, including locations where conventional internet infrastructure is difficult to establish.
The initiative is aimed at giving Defence personnel faster and more reliable access to information while carrying out their duties in different parts of the country.
PNGDF Chief Rear Admiral Philip Polewara said the organisation was embracing new technology to improve its communications capability and operational effectiveness.
The move is also expected to address communication challenges created by Papua New Guinea's difficult terrain and the widespread deployment of Defence personnel.
ICT Director Lieutenant Colonel Joe Mwawesi said PNGDF personnel operated across land, sea and air and needed reliable communication with headquarters.
Acting Chief of Force Preparations Lieutenant Colonel Edward Miro said timely information was important during military operations, particularly when personnel were working in remote areas.
“Starlink will improve lot on our effectiveness-on how effectively we carry out our orders, our operations and be able to get information as quickly as possible, and in real time,” Lt Col Miro said.
The PNGDF plans to initially focus the service on front-line personnel before gradually extending Starlink connectivity to other Defence Force bases.
