PNG Opposition Leader Rejects Claims of Political Compromise

PNG Opposition Leader James Nomane has rejected suggestions that a public appearance alongside Prime Minister James Marape at Gaire Primary School was evidence of political compromise between the Government and Opposition.

Mr Nomane said the appearance during the Independence celebrations was intended to encourage schoolchildren and honour Papua New Guinea’s founding leaders, rather than portray political unity where none existed.

The event was organised at the request of the Deputy Opposition Leader, who is also the local Member for Hiri-Koiari, for both leaders to stand before students and mark the country’s Independence celebrations.

Mr Nomane said there was no political arrangement behind the appearance, describing it instead as a gesture of respect towards the nation and its future generation.

“Independence Day is a reminder of our collective journey. It is bipartisan. It belongs to no party and no individual; it is greater than all of us,” he said.

The Opposition Leader also stressed that maintaining courtesy between political leaders should not be mistaken for abandoning the constitutional responsibilities of the Opposition.

He said the Opposition would continue to examine Government policies and question the use of public funds, regardless of personal relationships between political leaders.

“Courtesy is not compromise,” Mr Nomane said, adding that respect between leaders should not prevent scrutiny and accountability.

He called on Papua New Guineans to avoid viewing every act of cooperation or public courtesy through a political lens.

“True leadership rests on humility, integrity, and service,” he said.

Mr Nomane urged citizens to remain focused on nation-building and the future of the country's children.

“Leadership is service, not theatre.”
