PNG Police Urge More Gun Surrenders After NCD Resident Gives Up Revolver

An unlicensed firearm has been voluntarily surrendered to police in Port Moresby, prompting a fresh appeal for people holding illegal weapons to use the national gun amnesty.

NCD and Central Province Police Commander Benjamin Turi commended the unidentified resident after receiving a .38 calibre revolver and said the handover reflected the growing confidence between communities and police.

Turi singled out Seven Mile Police Station Commander Inspector Henry Map and his officers for their community engagement, saying their work had helped create an environment where residents felt able to approach police.

The commander said the latest handover was the second voluntary firearm surrender recorded in the National Capital District.

He urged police commanders to make the amnesty better known throughout their areas and to maintain direct contact with communities.

Turi extended the appeal to police personnel, asking them to take action where they know of illegal firearms within their own circles.

“Before we look elsewhere, I want to call on my police officers to inspect themselves and their circles, and to bring forward any illegal firearms they or their acquaintances may possess,” Turi said.

He said the firearm amnesty would remain in force until December 25, 2026, following the extension announced by Police Minister Sir John Pundari.

Turi said officers were ready to assist members of the public who wanted to surrender firearms and encouraged them to contact trusted police personnel, the Metropolitan Superintendent, the Central Provincial Police Commander or his office.

He also confirmed that the person who surrendered the latest weapon had chosen not to be identified because of personal circumstances.

The national firearm amnesty was launched on February 27, 2026. Sir John Pundari has travelled around the country during the program to witness the surrender of illegal weapons and has continued to appeal to firearm holders to hand them over.

“These offensive weapons will only lead to trouble,” Turi said.
