PNG Chiefs Target Cooper Bai for Inaugural NRL Squad

A possible homecoming is on the cards for Papua New Guinea international Cooper Bai, who is weighing up an opportunity to join the PNG Chiefs ahead of their historic entry into the National Rugby League.

The 19-year-old prop touched down in Port Moresby ahead of the Kumuls’ match against Toa Samoa, where he was met by Chiefs general manager Michael Chammas and chief executive officer Lorna McPherson.

Bai’s trip follows approval from the Gold Coast Titans to explore negotiations with the Chiefs before the November 1 deadline. The young forward, however, remains under contract with the Australian club for the 2027 season.

His discussions with the Chiefs will allow him to assess the proposal before deciding whether to pursue a move to the new Papua New Guinea franchise.

The club is continuing to recruit players for its inaugural NRL roster as it lays the foundation for its debut season. Securing emerging talent such as Bai could help strengthen the forward rotation and provide greater depth across the pack.

For Bai, the prospect of joining the Chiefs would present an opportunity to play for a team carrying the hopes of rugby league supporters across PNG.

While no signing has been confirmed, his visit signals a potential step towards bringing another Papua New Guinea international into the country’s newest professional rugby league club.
