PNG Chiefs unveil Historic Logo and Jersey

The PNG Chiefs have taken another major step towards their entry into the National Rugby League (NRL) Telstra Premiership in 2028, unveiling their official club logo and supporter jersey at a special ceremony in Port Moresby.

The launch brings the country's newest sporting institution closer to reality, with the club's identity drawing on Papua New Guinea's diverse cultures, traditional warrior heritage and national pride. Representatives from the PNG and Australian governments, the NRL and club officials attended the occasion.

Designed by a team of Papua New Guinean graphic artists, the logo features a traditional chief whose image incorporates cultural elements from across the Highlands, Islands, Momase and Southern regions.

The chief was selected to represent leadership, earned respect and responsibility towards the community. With more than 800 languages spoken across PNG, the club says its identity is intended to unite people from different backgrounds under one national sporting banner.

Four principal elements make up the emblem: a feather headpiece, cassowary bone, the chief's face and kina shells.

The five feathers draw inspiration from traditional ceremonial plumes and represent strength, beauty, chiefly standing and national pride. The Southern Cross connects the design to the national flag.

The cassowary bone reflects courage, power and the fighting spirit associated with traditional warriors, while the chief's face represents the shape of the country. Red ceremonial markings symbolise unity, with one team working towards a common purpose.

Kina shells, traditionally associated with wealth, trade and prestige among communities throughout PNG, complete the design by recognising the country's cultural heritage and future aspirations.

The official supporter jersey features artwork by renowned Papua New Guinean artist TABU, bringing local artistic traditions into the club's playing and supporter merchandise.

PNG Chiefs chief executive officer Lorna McPherson described the unveiling as a landmark in the club's development, saying it was the first time its complete identity had been presented to players, partners and supporters.

“Today marks one of the most significant milestones in the journey of the PNG Chiefs,” McPherson said.

She said the logo and jersey would provide supporters with symbols of belonging and an opportunity to identify with a club representing millions of Papua New Guineans.

McPherson added that the organisation wanted to establish more than a competitive rugby league team, with opportunities and a lasting national legacy forming part of its ambitions.

“We know the responsibility that comes with establishing this club and we are incredibly proud to show our club to the world today,” she said.

“We strive for the PNG Chiefs to be something our country is proud of in every way – not because of the success that we will achieve on the field, but for the opportunities and legacy we will create for our country.”

Club chair Catherine Harris said the new identity reflected the character and cultural pride of Papua New Guinea and should be embraced by people beyond the organisation itself.

“In reflecting the culture, character and pride of the nation, this identity belongs to more than the club – it belongs to the people of Papua New Guinea,” Harris said.

She said the unveiling would be remembered as an important stage in developing a sustainable club as preparations continued towards 2028 and beyond.

Kumuls representatives and PNG Chiefs development players Gairo Voro, Morea Morea and Finley Glare modelled the new jersey during the launch. The three players will also feature in promotional material for the club's official merchandise.

The supporter kit carries the club's foundation commercial partners, including BSP as principal partner, alongside PNG LNG, Coca-Cola, Nambawan Super, SP Lager, Struddys, Taylor Pacific, Toyota trading as Ela Motors and K92 Mining.

Supporters in PNG will be able to purchase the official jersey through licensed outlets around the country. Customers in Australia and other international markets will have access through online orders and selected retail stores.

McPherson said the launch marked the start of an important new chapter for the organisation.

“Today is the beginning of something truly special.”

“There will only ever be one logo and one first jersey, and today we take a huge step forward in truly bringing the PNG Chiefs to life.”
