PNG Kumuls Face Tough Toa Samoa Test as World Cup Rivalry Heats Up

Sports Commentary by George Lemako

The Papua New Guinea Kumuls face a major challenge against Toa Samoa on Saturday, October 24, with the Pacific rivals preparing to meet in a Rugby League World Cup clash that could test the home side’s determination, physicality and attacking discipline.

Samoa enters the contest after an emphatic 78-4 victory over France, setting a demanding standard for the Kumuls. PNG will need a significant improvement in intensity and execution if they are to challenge the Samoan side and turn home-ground support into a winning advantage.

Historical results also underline the challenge facing Papua New Guinea. In the past 15 years, Toa Samoa have won all three recorded 13-a-side international encounters between the two teams.

Samoa defeated the Kumuls 26-18 in the 2009 Pacific Cup before recording a 38-4 victory at the 2013 Rugby League World Cup at Craven Park in Hull, England. The Samoans also claimed a 24-6 win in the 2019 Oceania Shield encounter at Leichhardt Oval in Sydney.

PNG supporters, however, can point to a different result in the shorter format of the game. The Kumuls defeated Samoa in the final of the 2015 Pacific Games Rugby League Nines tournament in Port Moresby to secure gold. While that achievement demonstrated PNG’s ability to compete against Samoa, the nines format differs considerably from a full 13-a-side international.

The question now is whether the Kumuls can produce the physical presence and attacking sharpness required to challenge Samoa in the World Cup.

PNG’s performance against Lebanon raised questions about the team’s ability to deliver the big defensive hits, quick decision-making and intelligent attacking plays needed against stronger opposition. Although the Kumuls showed they could put points on the board, they will need greater consistency in both attack and defence against Samoa.

The forwards must establish a strong platform, the playmakers need to control the tempo, and the outside backs must capitalise on opportunities when they arise. Defensive discipline will also be crucial against a Samoan team coming off a high-scoring performance.

For the Kumuls, this is more than another World Cup fixture. It is an opportunity to challenge a difficult recent record against Samoa and demonstrate that they can match one of the tournament’s formidable Pacific teams.

Playing at home offers PNG the backing of passionate supporters, but crowd support alone will not be enough. The Kumuls must bring the aggression, commitment and tactical awareness that have long been associated with Papua New Guinea rugby league.

Samoa will arrive with confidence following its commanding win over France, while PNG will be determined to make the most of its home-ground advantage.

On Saturday, October 24, the Kumuls will need to dig deep, raise their intensity and deliver a complete team performance if they are to end Samoa’s recent dominance in the 13-a-side international rivalry.
