Police in PNG’s capital, Port Moresby, will be deployed in full force for Saturday’s Rugby League World Cup matches, with the city’s Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab urging residents to maintain peace and give visiting teams and supporters a warm welcome.
Papua New Guinea will take on Lebanon in the men’s tournament before the PNG women’s team faces France at the Santos National Football Stadium on October 17, 2026. Police have warned that officers will remain on high alert to prevent disturbances during the matches.

The Metropolitan Superintendent said the international fixtures would put Port Moresby in the spotlight, making public safety and the conduct of residents important throughout the event.
He warned individuals against engaging in activities that could disrupt the games or threaten the safety of spectators, players and visitors.
“The eyes of the rugby league world will be on Port Moresby,” the Metropolitan Superintendent said. “Police will be out in full force and on full alert. We will not tolerate anyone who wants to disturb the peace in our city.”
He also encouraged supporters to turn out for both matches and show respect to all participating teams, including Lebanon and France.
The police chief said the tournament offered an opportunity for residents to demonstrate Papua New Guinea’s hospitality and ensure visiting fans felt welcome in the nation’s capital.
“I appeal to everyone to come out to the games and support our teams. Support Lebanon and France as well. Our visitors are our guests, and I want every one of them to experience the true Melanesian welcome.”
“Let us show the world that Port Moresby is a proud, peaceful, and welcoming host city,” the Metropolitan Superintendent said.
