The five-day technical exercise brought together medical physicists from Australia, Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea to assess the equipment and ensure it meets the necessary standards before being introduced into clinical services.

The commissioning team conducted performance assessments, quality assurance tests and measurements to establish the machine’s baseline operating capabilities. These checks were designed to confirm that the simulator delivers accurate images within the required technical tolerances.

Medical physicists also examined the relationship between CT Hounsfield Units (HU) and Relative Electron Density (RED) using different tissue-equivalent materials.

The resulting measurements were incorporated into the hospital’s Treatment Planning System (TPS), an essential component in calculating radiation doses for patients undergoing radiotherapy.

PMGH Chief Executive Officer Dr Paki Molumi said the commissioning results would undergo final technical verification before being submitted to the hospital’s Clinical Governance for approval.

The equipment will only be released for clinical use after the required approval process is completed.

The development is expected to strengthen PMGH’s ability to provide safe, precise and quality-assured cancer treatment services in Papua New Guinea.
