Fiji PM Bainimarama renews invite for US President Trump

Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has renewed his invite for US President Donald Trump to come see for himself the effects of climate change.

Preparing to chair the 23rd Conference of Parties, Bainimarma remains hopeful that as a present signatory to the Paris Agreement the US leader will come to the table.

“The Paris government came into force with the full backing of the US government then. Word has now come up from the new administration that President Donald Trump is pulling out of the deal. We are going to work on that. Of course we have the opportunity to go and see him and invite him to Fiji. If he gets here, we’ll be able to change his mind.”

Bainimarama says teams led by Fiji are already in negotiations to gain more support – especially with larger nations who aren’t fully on board with reducing carbon emissions.

The Fijian government is setting up a local secretariat to prepare for the conference in Germany come November.
