Donated water tanks provide relief to communities in Southern Highlands

Communities from Kutubu in PNG’s Southern Highlands Province are now better equipped to withstand the dry season with the recent donation and installation of two water tanks by ExxonMobil PNG (EMPNG) Limited, operator of PNG LNG.

The donation took place last week Saturday at Pimaga station in Southern Highlands.

The recipients of the water tanks, under EMPNG’s Water Tank Project, includes Pimaga Rural Hospital and the Daga community in Southern Highlands.

EMPNG Upstream Pipeline Supervisor George Shaw who spoke at the handover ceremony to the communities, said the water tanks come at a much needed time for these communities and will continue to deliver fresh drinking water to the communities for years to come.

“Pimaga Rural Hospital previously had to turn away patients at times due to their inability to store clean drinking water. The hospital now has an 80,000 litre water tank allowing them to provide health services to patients all year,” Mr Shaw said.

The Daga community who received a 22,000 litre water tank, installed at Daga village, will also supply water to Pimaga Rural Hospital and the nearby community, who hosts the annual EMPNG sponsored Kutubu Kundu and Digaso Cultural Festival.

EMPNG will be also be installing water tanks at Nipa Rural Hospital and Dauli Teachers College later in the year.

EMPNG’s Water Tank Project was developed in response to the increase in demand for more water supply in these areas, especially during the dry season. The Water Tank Project was initiated to support local institutions with infrastructural assistance which will be of long-term benefit to the communities in Project areas.
