Japan to upgrade Port Moresby's Sewerage system
Work will now go ahead for Port Moresby's State-of-the-Art Sewerage system, following the signing of a Contract Agreement between the National Government and a Japanese Consultancy company, yesterday.
This project, to cost over 280-million Kina, is jointly funded by the Japan International Corporation Agency, or JICA and the National Government.
It's said to be the biggest and most modern sewerage system, to be built in the Pacific region.
Governor-General, Grand Chief Sir Michael Ogio signed the papers, witnessed by Managing Director of Independent Public Business Corporation, Wasantha Kumarasiri, JICA representatives and the media.
There are two main sewerage systems in Port Moresby, one for the inland area and the other for the coastal area.
This upgrading project is to improve the sewerage systems for the coastal area as currently its an health hazard for coastal communities.
The aim of the project is to improve the sanitation and hygiene condition of the coastal area through the implementation of the latest sewerage technology.
The NJS Consultancy Limited, a Japanese company will execute this huge project.
IPBC Project Director Werner Gebauer said the project will give a big face lift to NCD. . "Definitely it will be a different situation, we will have a state of the art waste water treatment plant actually the biggest one in the South Pacific and the most modern" .
Meantime, the project will take about three and a half years to complete and currently its in the procurement phase and its hopeful the actual construction phase will start end of this year.
