The new Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), H.E. Li Ruiyou today paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill at his Parliamentary Office following Presentation of His Credentials to Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio.
In welcoming Amb. Ruiyou, Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill acknowledged the long historical ties and excellent existing relations with the Chinese Government and its people since entering into formal diplomatic ties in 1976 and following early settlement by Chinese people in various parts of PNG during the early part of the last century.
He also reaffirmed the PNG Government’s strict adherence to the “One China Policy” The current relations between both countries, he mentioned, had tremendously expanded and diversified in the past 10 years in terms of politics, economic trade and investment and business ties. “Chinese investment has rapidly expanded particularly in projects such as Ramu Nickel, the International Convention Centre, Lae City Port Development and the other major road infrastructure projects in Port Moresby,” Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said.
He also took time to acknowledge the new Ambassador’s predecessor H.E Qiu Bohua, who had set a very good foundation for the expansion of the relations. In response, Ambassador Ruiyou conveyed greetings from Premier Li Keqiang and the people of China and mentioned that PNG was seen as a sincere and genuine friend of the PRC.
He also acknowledged the growing and diversifying relations and stated that during his tenure he would ensure continuity as well as explore new areas of potential for cooperation. Ambassador Ruiyou also informed of Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill’s intending visit to PRC and advised that his Office was now working closely with the PNG Department of Foreign Affairs to firm up and confirm the dates. Amb. Ruiyou then took the opportunity to thank Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill for increasing the security presence at the construction site of the International Convention Centre to ensure the project was completed. In other related matters, Amb. Ruiyou expressed satisfaction on the feasibility study of the Western Pacific University in Ialibu, Southern Highlands, by a visiting Chinese Technical Team. He advised that their report was now being evaluated for project approval by the Chinese Government.

In closing Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill expressed his Government’s desire to work closely with the new Chinese Ambassador during his tenure and encouraged for his spouse to consider involving herself in community projects with spouses of PNG Leaders.
