Aim of new curriculum in PNG to up literacy, math skills
THE new education curriculum system in PNG is aimed at increasing literacy and numeracy skills in the country according to an officer from the curriculum development and assessment division of the Education Department.
Steven Tandale said one of the main recommendations of the task force team that was headed by president of the Divine Word University, Fr Juan Czuba was to introduce a standard based curriculum to exit the outcome based curriculum in 2013.
Tandale said the curriculum development and implementation must be given due consideration and support as it was a government agenda.
He said from the task force’s recommendations, some points were taken into effect immediately.
He said the government’s focus on increasing numeracy and literacy skills in the country has witnessed the need for children as early as five years to be taught English as a formal spoken language and as a subject in class.
He said elementary and primary teaching syllabus and teacher guides have already been developed under standard base curriculum and will be ready for implementation next year.
