The SP PNG Hunters displayed a magnificent fight back to clinch a victory over Redcliffe Dolphins 43 – 36 at the “Graveyard” in Kokopo this afternoon.
In the first half, Redcliffe wasted no time and registered three unanswered tries in the first 20 minutes and got the lead 18 – 0 . Hunters fought back in the 32 minute to reduce the difference to 18 – 4.
In the second half, Hunters were first to score and trailed 18 – 10. However, this was short lived as Redcliffe used their big men to crash over Hunters defence line to extend their lead to 24 – 10.
Hunters fought back and reduced the margin to 10 points and were trailing 24 – 14 in the 55th minute. They found weak defence in the Dolphin’s line and touched down for another 4 pointer and Jemmins put the ball into the uprights and trailed 24 – 20.
Some errors from Hunters gave Dolphin’s an opportunity to score and extend their lead to 30 – 20. . The Dolphins kept the enthusiastic Kokopo crowd silent when they out-muscled Hunters again and extended their lead to 34 points to 20.
The SP Hunters ‘never say die’ attitude showed them continuously attacking the Dolphins defence and scored again in the 70th minute. This showed them reduced the margin 34 – 26. It was Hunters again to strike and reduce the difference to 34 – 30 and it was anyone’s game in the dying minutes.
Dolphins got a relieve when Hunters were found taking down an opponent player without the ball. The Dolphins resorted to get 2 points and extended teh score to 36 – 30 at the 75th minute.
Hunter’s solid defence showed, Dolphins lost control of the ball and gave one last opportunity for Hunters. Hunters utilized the opportunity and out-muscled Dolphins to score under the uprights. Jemmins added the extras and level the score at 36 all.
If it was to show by example, you won’t deny the facts that leaders would lead by example, Captain Israel Eliab rose to the occasion, told his troops, this is our territory called the graveyard, this the game that we don’t want to give away and there amid his exhausted troops slotted a field goal to steal the game from the Dolphins 37 – 36 at the 78th minutes.
A short kick off from Dolphins put the ball to Hunters sensational Garry Lo who was unstoppable and scored the winning try and sealed the game. 43 – 36.
The win puts Hunters on 21 points.
