Digicel presents 70 Mobile tablet Devices to Mendi Secondary School

Mendi Secondary School in the Southern Highlands Province is one of six schools in Papua New Guinea to pilot Digicel’s innovative Education Table Programme – a project designed to make electronic information libraries readily accessible to students and teachers using a mobile tablet PC device.

Despite the school holidays, a good number of students and teachers were on hand to receive 70 tablets from Digicel’s Government Projects Coordinator Shent Kiddie in Mendi today (on Friday).

School Principal Timsey Sap said the school was honoured to be part of an advanced education project brought on by PNG’s leading telecommunications company, Digicel.

“We are honoured to have been chosen in the pilot phase of what will be an innovative project aimed at enhancing and revolutionising both the learning and teaching environments,” Sap said.

Government Relations Director Gary Seddon said it was through innovation that Digicel has introduced its e-learning programme.

“The end result of this pilot phase will see the project rolled out to other provincial and district schools in PNG. The project in Mendi Secondary School complements our existing collaboration programme with Southern Highlands Governor William Powi and his administration where K1m has been invested in Digicel for the improvement of communications and ICT services throughout the province. It is with the Governor’s support that projects like this are possible,” Seddon said.

The presentation in Mendi brings the total number of pilot projects to four.  These schools include Sevese Morea Primary and Gordons Secondary in Port Moresby, Sir Tei Abal Secondary in Wabag and Mendi Primary School.

The next two schools to pilot the Education Tablet Programme include Cameron Secondary School in Alotau and the Seventh Day Adventist Primary School in Kavieng, New Ireland Province.
