Indonesian fugitive to remain as PNG citizen

A FINAL submission from the Department of Justice and Attorney-General seeking approval from Cabinet in July this year for proceedings in the National Court to revoke the citizenship of Indonesian fugitive Djoko Tjandra may have been withdrawn.

It was the fourth and final submission presented to former attorney-general Kerenga Kua for presentation to Cabinet but it was never brought to NEC’s attention because Mr Kua was sacked a day before he could present to the team.

But current Attorney-General Ano Pala brushed aside this saying there was nothing to talk about as he has been "a very busy man" since his appointment in July.

The submission was only asking for two things. They were for Cabinet’s approval for him to go to the National Court to give order to revoke Tjandra’s citizenship and for a lawyer’s approval.

It is understood  that the submission had been withdrawn.

But while this was happening in PNG, back in Indonesia the Attorney-General’s office in Jakarta said the Djoko matter had been put on hold because of the vastly improved bilateral relations that PNG was enjoying with Indonesia under the leadership of new president Joko Widodo.

This was also because the matter was highly classified as sensitive due to the change of citizenship of Djoko to being a Papua New Guinean.

"He cannot be touched now because he has a different identity and is a Papua New Guinean citizen, and there are a lot of legal procedures involved both in PNG and Indonesia if he is to face the law,"

Indonesia has received reports that Joe Chan, his current PNG name, has more than K3 billion investment in PNG, also with his family who is reputably known in the country and the Government of PNG.
