PNG University of Technology Condemns Harassment of Young Woman in Viral Video

The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) has condemned the actions of students involved in the harassment of a young woman on campus, after a video of the incident went viral on social media. The victim has been confirmed to be from outside the university community.

According to the footage, the woman was surrounded and harassed by a group of male students in what the university described as “mob behaviour.” The incident, filmed on campus, sparked outrage across the country and renewed public calls for respect and discipline among students.

Vice Chancellor Professor Ora Renagi said the behaviour was “deeply disturbing” and made it clear that harassment is a crime and will not be tolerated. He stressed that PNGUoT is built on respect, discipline, and the rule of law, and that the conduct seen in the video contradicts the institution’s values.

“A full investigation into this incident has been launched and those identified will face disciplinary action and the law,” Professor Renagi said. “PNGUoT will protect the dignity and safety of all.”

The Senior Executive Management Team (SEMT) also expressed disappointment that such behaviour occurred on campus, warning that mob actions damage the university’s reputation and undermine its commitment to providing a safe environment.

The incident has added to ongoing discussions about student behaviour and the need for stronger enforcement of codes of conduct in PNG’s universities. Authorities have urged students to remember that they represent the institution both on and off campus.

The viral video has sparked nationwide condemnation, with leaders and members of the public calling for those involved to be held accountable. PNGUoT has assured the public that appropriate action will be taken without exception.
