Second-Half Surge Propels PNG Hunters to Big Win Over Clydesdales
Papua New Guinea Hunters exploded in the second half to crush Western Clydesdales 48-12 in Round 20 of the Hostplus Cup at Santos National Football Stadium, Port Moresby, on Sunday, 10th August. The home side scored six tries after halftime, turning a competitive first half into a commanding victory in front of their home fans.
Leading 16-6 at the break, the Hunters wasted no time extending their advantage, with Alex Max crossing in the 42nd minute. Douglas David followed with back-to-back tries in the 51st and 59th minutes, before Robert Mathias grabbed his second of the day just four minutes earlier. The floodgates opened further with late tries from Manisa Kai and Jordan Pat to seal the result.
The first half had been a more even contest, with Judah Rimbu opening the scoring in the second minute. Solo Wane and Sanny Wabo added further tries, while Clydesdales replied through Emry Pere in the 10th minute. Robert Mathias’ first try in the 35th minute gave the Hunters a 10-point buffer heading into the sheds.

Clent Lama contributed significantly with the boot, slotting four conversions in the 44th, 56th, 68th, and 76th minutes. The visitors’ only other points came from Joseph Litidamu’s 71st-minute try, which was converted by Corey Fenning, who also landed a goal in the first half.
The Hunters’ second-half dominance was built on quick play-the-balls and clever ball movement that repeatedly caught the Clydesdales defence out of position. Their ability to keep the ball alive through offloads and well-timed passes created constant scoring opportunities.
Even with a late setback when Epel Kapinias was sent to the sin bin in the 79th minute, the Hunters held firm in defence. The Clydesdales were unable to capitalise on the extra man, as the home side’s line speed and discipline kept them pinned in their own half.
This result continues the Hunters’ strong push in the Hostplus Cup and builds confidence heading into the closing stages of the season. With a balanced attack and improving defensive structure, the Port Moresby-based side looks primed to challenge any opposition in the weeks ahead.
