Niue Premier visits PNG
Relations between the people of Papua New Guinea and Niue will continue to grow with the visit by Niue’s Premier, Toke Tufukia Talagi, for a two-day visit to Port Moresby that begins today. Premier Talagi is visiting Papua New Guinea at the invitation of the Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, who said it is essential to continue to strengthen the bonds between Pacific Island countries. “We are all equal brother and sister nations in the Pacific Islands,” PM O’Neill said. “Our countries have shared interests in our cultural exchange, in our ocean-based trade and in the challenges that confront us all such as climate change. “Niue is also interested to look at Papua New Guinea’s development experience as their country works to improve living conditions and economic opportunity. “I look forward to discussing these shared substantive issues with Premier Talagi.” The Prime Minister said he has met with Premier Talagi on a number of occasions through regional forums, and he expects the Premier to be warmly received by Papua New Guineans. “Both of our countries are members of the Pacific Islands Forum, which is the paramount body for engagement in the Pacific. “We would like to look at how we can continue to work with all member states through the forum to improve prosperity in our region.” PM O’Neill said he is aware that climate change continues to pose a significant threat to the people and the economy of Niue and he looks forward to further discussion on this issue. “Papua New Guinea is using our influence and our contacts through forums such as APEC to draw global attention to the effects of climate change on Pacific Island nations. “The causes of climate change are global, but the problems are felt at a local level in countries such as Niue. “The global community must work together to help Niue to confront this challenge.” PNG Today/Postcoureir
