Gulf Governor Havila Kavo gets 3 years imprisonment

Gulf Governor Havila Kavo was sentenced to jail for three years this morning following his conviction on charges of misappropriation.

Deputy Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika , in handing down this decision at Waigani National Court, deducted half of his three-year jail term for fully repaying the K131, 338  he received as his outstanding allowances from the K10 million Kutubu MoA trust funds belonging to the people of Kikori district.

This means Mr Kavo will spend 18 months or 1 year and 6 months at Bomana prison outside Port Moresby for breaching the trust the Kikori, Gulf and people of this country had on him to serve them.

Justice Salika also reminded Mr Kavo during sentencing this morning that he had gotten the money from the wrong basket (trust funds) to pay his outstanding allowances.

The senior judge said Members of Parliament are in positions of high degree of trust and that trust had been breached, he (Mr Kavo) should spend the half of his three-year jail term in prison. PNG Today/Post Courier
