PNG Power installs STATCOM-SVG to boost electric city in Madang
PNG Power is not only placing emphasis on improving reliability on the generation front but also looking at improving the quality and stability of power generated, transmitted and distributed to its customers in the Ramu, Port Moresby and Gazelle power grids.
To solve the issue of voltage complaints received from customers in Port Moresby, Ramu and Gazelle grids, PPL has brought in the latest third generation power quality compensation Static Var Generator (STATCOM-SVG) from Delixi Australia Pty Ltd to improve power quality and stability in the generation, transmission and distribution systems.
The purpose of the STATCOM-SVG which are currently connected to the 132kV and 66kV Substations in Ramu and Port Moresby grids respectively are to improve the power quality by controlling voltage and perform effective reactive power compensation.
PPL installed the first STATCOM-SVG at East Taraka Substation, Lae in 2011. The second one was installed at 6Mile Boroko Substation, Port Moresby in 2014 and this is the third one installed at the Meiro Substation, Madang.
At the power generation stations, STATCOM-SVG manages and minimizes the reactive power component supplied by the generators which prevent winding temperature rise thus enabling maximum power output from the generating units.
On the transmission and distribution systems, STATCOM improves voltage stability, power quality and maintains voltage to 1.0 per unit level between the generating source and customer ends. STATCOM-SVG also corrects power factor and filter harmonics in the electricity supply system.
Low voltage units are also available for connection to customer installations, providing dynamic voltage support and control. STATCOM-SVG technology replaces capacitors which were traditionally used as a fixed voltage support mechanism.
PNG Power has provided the solution to these particular problems for customers in Ramu grid by recently installing the 11 MVAr STATCOM-SVG at the Meiro Substation in Madang.
This is the second one installed for the Ramu grid and will improve the power quality and stability within the grid.
This technology is first of its kind in PNG and PNG Power becomes the first electricity utility in the Pacific Region to adopt the STATCOM-SVG technology.
STATCOM-SVG is the third generation of dynamic reactive compensation technology with quick response, good harmonic performance and high reliability. It plays an important role in energy saving, grid stability and reliability, and power quality management.
