PNG Amateur Boxking Union fails its code : Kiap

“It’s not easy to develop young talents into recognised athletes, it takes a massive amount of hard work and commitment and the manner in which the PNG Amateur Boxing Union has treated my athlete is totally unfair and unacceptable,” says President of NCD Amateur Boxing Association MR Honk Kiap.
Mr Kiap raised a number of serious allegations against the PNG Amateur Boxing Union in a press conference today after identifying certain issues during the staging of the National Boxing Selection Trials last early this month in Goroka.
“The selection criteria that were used to select the train on squad for the Pacific Games should come under serious screening,” says Mr Kiap.
This follows his athlete Rudy Mapor, who fought in the 91kg division and was left out of the Pacific Games train on squad although he won all of his bouts. Even the current South Pacific 52kg division champion and one of PNG’s National fighters’ Junior Kauka was disqualified on disciplinary grounds and excluded from the squad.
Mr Kiap also claimed that 9 of his fighters who are current National champions were treated unfairly as they were told to pay for their travel to Goroka while the Union saw fit to give special treatment to fly in fighters and certain officials from other centres into to Goroka for the Trials.
“My Question is ‘WHAT IS THEIR INTEREST?’ I am definitely not satisfied with the treatment given to my fighters,” says Mr Kiap.
Mr Kiap says that he has no personal grudges towards the officials of the Union body but he would like to see a change in the Management and the way the union is run.
Meanwhile following the Selection Trials 9 fighters from NCD were named in the train on squad for the Pacific Games and they are; Female – Laizani Soma (60kg), Raphaella Kaore (6okg), Debbie Kaore (75kg), Christine Ikupu (75kg). Male – Charlie Keama (49kg), Henry Umints (56kg), Tau Boga (64kg), Lucas Wakere (81kg) and Billy Torea (91+ kg).
