PNG ranks high in road accidents in the world

Papua New Guinea has the highest rate of road accidents in the world.
This was revealed by the Road Traffic Authority Acting Chief Executive Officer Nelson Terema.

Mr Terema said a new software system brought from the United Kingdom to monitor road accidents has indicated that PNG has some of the most reckless drivers compared to other countries.

He said according to the Road Accident Data Base for the country, PNG is ranked 4th or 5th in the world.
Mr Terema said the Road Traffic Authority will start installing GPS devices on all vehicles including PMV buses and Taxis to monitor and control the speed of vehicles.
He said night travels especially PMV buses travelling along the Lae-Madang Highways to the highlands will also come to a stop, allowing drivers to have proper rests before taking new trips
