Search on for Fijian girl in PNG

The Fijian High Commission office staff in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, are now looking for a 14-year-old Fijian student from Nadi.

It is alleged that the young girl had gone with a PNG businessman last December and had not returned. The businessman is married to a Fijian woman.

Fiji’s High Commissioner to PNG, Romanu Tikotikoca told the Fij Sun yesterday that the girl’s parents in Fiji had contacted him as they were concerned about their daughter’s safety. “Just two days ago I received a call from the mother of this young girl; she was very concerned.

“She requested if the Fijian High Commission in PNG could do something to trace where the girl is staying,” Mr Tikotikoca said. The latest news obtained by Fiji Sun is that the Fijian office staff with the help of Fijians in Port Moresby now know of her whereabouts in Port Moresby.

Mr Tikotikoca said he had instructed the Fiji office to locate her with the help of the Fijian locals. The girl’s parents also said their daughter had called them saying she wanted to retun to Fiji.

Mr Tikotikoca said the decision by the parents to allow their daughter to accompany this businesssman to PNG was unwise. “This 14-year-old girl is supposed to be under the guidance of her parents and they should not have allowed her to go, especially to a foreign country,” he said.

“Now the girl wants to come back and the Fiji office in PNG has to find her.” When contacted yesterday, mother, Joana Tinai, confirmed that her daughter was in PNG and said she would give further comments when she (daughter) arrives back into the country.

Mr Tikotikoca reminded all Fijians coming to PNG to report to the Fijian office on their address in PNG. “One thing the mission wants to inform all Fijians that go to PNG, when they encounter problem, it is the duty of the High Commission to look after their welfare and well being.”

He said the Fijian office would do all their best to get the girl back to her parents in Nadi. Mr Tikotikoca is in the country for the Fiji and PNG senior consultation begining today at the Grand Pacific Hotel.
