Air Niugini Cadet Engineers leave for study abroad
Four Air Niugini cadet engineers including a female left for studies at Air New Zealand Aviation Institute in Christchurch, New Zealand on Wednesday, 25th March.
The four included Raphael Purkii, Brian Pessie, Douglas Marita and Arleena Kukari, the only woman. These cadets were chosen after an intensive recruitment and selection process which saw over 1000 applicants from secondary schools and universities in the country who applied.
Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer, Simon Foo said Air Niugini invests a lot of money and resources into training engineers and pilots each year and urged the cadets to be focused and make Air Niugini and the country proud.
Mr Foo said “ Always remember that the airline invests a lot in your studies and we expect nothing less from you. Make good use of the opportunity and be focused in your studies.”
The CEO also challenged them to be good ambassadors of the airline and the country by being aware of the social and disciplinary issues whilst being away for studies.
He said “Self discipline gives you the power to stick to your decisions and follow them through, without changing your mind .Life puts challenges and problems on the path to success and achievement, and in order to rise above them, you have to act with perseverance and persistence, and this of course, requires self-discipline.”
Brian Pessie spoke on behalf of the cadets. He thanked Air Niugini for the opportunity and said they will do their best for the airline and the country.
“ We understand that the airline has invested so much in us and we are not taking this opportunity lightly.”
Air Niugini has revived its Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Cadet Scheme four years ago. It’s an intensive recruitment and selection process which considers those within the age of eighteen and twenty-five with a minimum of Grade 12 education with an A or B passes in Physics, Applied Maths, Maths A, Applied English and or PETT certification.
The Engineer cadet scheme is a 4 year program and aims to develop young engineers into becoming Licensed Engineers by utilizing overseas training with Air New Zealand. The successful candidates will spend four years training with Air New Zealand’s Aviation Institute with final outcome being European Aviation Safety Agency(EASA) basic license.
Currently, Air Niugini has a total of 39 cadets including six women training in New Zealand.
