Oil Search Pacific Games Relay in Vanimo
Today, day three of the Oil Search Pacific Games Relay, the Baton was scheduled to visit many towns and villages including Vanimo Town, Bewani Government Border Post, Wutung Village, Musu Village, Yako Village, Waramo Village, Lido Village and the Surf Club, Vanimo Green District Office, Vanimo Primary School, Vanimo General Hospital, Sandaun Provincial Government, Dali Beach, Sissano Lagoon, Tumeleo Island and Aitape.
The Baton travelled by vehicle, foot and boat. The boat used to transport the Baton was kindly donated by the Raihu Rural Hospital.
The mouth of the Sissano Lagoon and the village of Sissano were among the hardest hit areas during the Papua New Guinea tsunami of July 1998. The tsunami comprised three waves, each estimated to be about 4m high. The second of the three waves rose to a height of 10-15 m above sea level causing serious damage. The devastating event was a prominent part of PNG’s history and therefore the Baton made a special visit to the site.
In Aitape Town the Baton was set to visit Santana Primary School, St Ignatius Secondary School and Raihu Rural Hospital.
