Oil Search Pacific Games Relay in Yonki, Eastern Highlands Province

The Oil Search Pacific Games Relay went underground today, 230 metres below the surface to the Papua New Guinea Power Yonki Dam turbine generation hall.

On the way to Yonki the Relay travelled through Eastern Highlands, in the early morning fog, past roadside truck stops, villages and breathtaking scenery.

At Yonki, Pacific Games sponsor, PPL put on a Relay event to remember for their workers, their families and the surrounding communities, starting with a warm up aerobic session in the pouring rain followed by a community send off at Konorot Market that closed down the Highlands Highway for an hour.

The Relay, with over 150 runners, was run through all the PPL operations including the underground generation hall, the control room, across the Yonki Dam itself and the causeway, as water was spilled down the spillway, around town and was even taken up a power pole by the linesmen.

Chairman Larry Andagali and MPs Merrah Kipefa and Johnson Tuke joined the Relay for the day’s activity and the community singsing celebrations at the conclusion of the event.

Chairman Andagali thanked Oil Search and the Games Organising Committee for allowing Yonki to be a part of the special event that is the Oil Search Pacific Games Relay. COO John Yanis also reminded the onlooking community that this was a once in a life time event and that they should be proud to be a part of it.

The Oil Search Pacific Games Relay travels to Kundiawa on Wednesday.
