Prime Minister O'Neill upset over misuse of Tuition Fee Free Funds

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill,  is upset over the missuse of  Tuition Fee Free Funds which the government has made available for all schools throughout the country. Mr. O'Neill says he will not tolerate the level of incompetency and mismanagement of education funds by officials . He said after hearing complains about schools not receiving sufficient funds  to keep the schools running.  He assured the country that he will sort this over the next few days.

He said despite the fact that free education funds were successfully made available to schools; many have not received their funding.

Mr O’Neill said over the past three years, the government has invested close to K6 billion in education.

Yesterday, the PNG Teachers Association raised concerns on behalf of the schools that have missed out on the first batch of payments, or received less money than what was owed to them.

Prime Minister said for the first quarter of this year alone, the government released K300 million in funds for school fees.

He said even though the government started intervention programs in the education sector, funds have been diverted or misused by officials.

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, said the government will not tolerate this kind of attitude, and will come down hard on officials who are not doing their job properly.
